Ocean freight transport involves shipping goods via shipping containers by sea.
Exporters and importers primarily transport goods by sea. 90 percent of all shipments are made by ocean freight and sea freight. International freight transportation via courier, standard air freight, and express air freight are all faster, but are also more expensive. In general, smaller shipments, and products of a high value, must be shipped by these other methods.
Ocean freight can be slow, but air freight can be expensive. Some freight forwarders offer express shipping in such a case. As a result, this service is often faster and less expensive than air freight. It streamlines ocean freight processes by identifying only the fastest ocean services and premium trucking services.
Why Ship By Sea?
Capacity and value One container holds 10000 beer bottles! And ocean freight is cheaper. A shipment weighing more than 500 kg should not be sent by air freight. For light shipments, you can use this calculator to find out whether your shipment will be billed by actual weight or dimensional weight. FBX provides live international shipping rates.
Having fewer restrictions International law, national law, carrier organization regulations and individual carrier regulations all play a role in defining and determining what goods are considered dangerous for transport. There are more products restricted as air cargo than ocean freight, including: gases (e.g. lamp bulbs), all things flammable (e.g. Items that are toxic or corrosive (e.g., perfume, Samsung Galaxy Note 7). batteries), magnetic substances (e.g. Public health risks (e.g. speakers), oxidizers, and biochemical products (e.g. chemical medicines) are also evaluated. untanned hides). CO2 emissions from ocean freight are negligible compared to air freight. The research found that for 5000 kilometers of ocean freight, each ton will generate 150 kilograms of CO2 emissions, while air freight emits 6605 kilograms of CO2.

What Are The Downsides Of Ocean Freight?
Speed aircraft are about 30 times faster than ocean liners; passenger jets cruise at 575 mph, while ocean liners steam at 16-18 mph. Thus, it is no surprise that your shipment by air freight will take at least 20 days longer than your shipment by ocean freight.
Ocean freight generally takes much longer to deliver than air freight because of port congestion, customs delays, and bad weather conditions. In most cases, tracking technology in air freight is more advanced than that in ocean freight. This means ocean freight has a higher likelihood of getting lost compared to air freight. The situation is especially difficult when the shipment is less than a container load. Digitalization is making ocean freight more reliable.
Ocean freight is more likely to be damaged or destroyed than air freight. This is because it is in transit for a much longer time, and because ships move more easily. You don't need to worry about ocean cargo falling off ships too much. Although the urban myth says 10,000 containers are lost every year, the truth is that only 546 of the 120 million movements per year end up in the water. Even less likely is piracy. The Horn of Africa, the Gulf of Guinea, and the Malacca Straits are hotspots in recent years.
Ocean Freight Services
A full container load (FCL) or a less than container load (LCL) can be used for ocean and sea freight. A LCL container can pack more than one shipment. As a result, there will be more paperwork and additional physical work for the forwarder, consolidating multiple shipments into one container before the main transit and de-consolidating the shipments at the destination. This gives LCL three disadvantages:
FCL shipments arrive more quickly than LCL shipments. Usually you should allow an extra week or two for LCL.
Damage, loss, and misplacement are more likely with LCL.
LCL costs more per cubic meter.
Once your shipment is large enough, and shipping rates are cheaper for FCL, it might be worth sending a full container, even if you don't fill the entire container. LCL to FCL upgrades are typically achieved at a point around 15 cubic meters (the smallest size container is a 20 footer).
Sea Freight Rates per kg
Most LCL shipping is priced by volume only, not by weight, except for especially heavy items.
Use these guidelines for selecting the most cost-effective mode of delivery for most products:
When a shipment weighs more than 500 kg, air freight becomes uneconomical.
The cost of ocean freight is usually $2-4/kg, and a shipment from China to the US typically takes 30-40 days.
Using air freight for a China-US shipment between 150 kg and 500 kg costs about $5-8 per kilo and can take 8-10 days.
It is faster to ship by express air freight, but it is more expensive.
The cost of couriering a package less than 150 kg is economic (express freight).
